invitation, as a representative of Kwongtung to the
big Conference, and as a mediator between Nanking
and Hunan. If such a man could stand for long as
the head of a nation, then there is no such a thing
as political honesty or such a thing as loyalty
between superior and subordinate. With the
removal of Chiang Kai-shek, a worse influence will
take his place Feng Yu-hsiang, as I have stated.
What else can take place? The scheme that I have
just expounded. Let the country be governed by honest men and experienced statesmen like Tuan Chi-
jui, and honourable men and clean fighters like
Wu Pei-fu. As for myself, I have no ambition
whatever.
I do not want any office. I only hope that the moderates in power, such as Li Chai-sum and Li Chung-jen, Tang Seng-chi and Sun Chuan-fang, will throw in their lot with such a government when it is formed, not for their individual good, but for
the good of the country as a whole.
